MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State women's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench, but fell 75-65 to the Evansville Purple Aces at home Friday.
The Eagles had two players score in double figures, led by Veronica Charles, who had 19 points and eight steals. Isabel Gonzalez added 11 points and Hallie Rhodes added nine points and two blocks.
Morehead State's defense held Evansville to only 40 percent shooting from the field.
The Eagles wrap up their five game home stand Sunday against Bellarmine, with tip-off slated for 2:00 PM.Â
How It Happened
Morehead State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-18.
Evansville kept adding to that lead, building a 25-20 advantage before Morehead State went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Tolisha Walker, to take a 30-25 lead. The Purple Aces then came roaring back to take a 34-30 lead heading into halftime.
Evansville continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-30 advantage before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Sophie Benharouga, to tie things up at 36 with 7:44 to go in the third. The Eagles could not advance their rally further as the Purple Aces took a 59-42 lead into the fourth quarter. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
Morehead State narrowed its deficit to 64-50 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Charles' layup, to shrink the deficit to 64-58 with 4:10 to go in the contest. Evansville responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-65. Morehead State took advantage of six Evansville turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
