MOREHEAD, Ky. – In the final game of its trip to the Best on the Bayou Classic, Morehead State softball scattered hits all throughout its lineup, but was unable to generate enough scoring and fell to former Ohio Valley Conference opponent Jacksonville State 6-0 on Sunday at the Ouachita Sports Complex in Monroe, La.
Although the Eagles had some success at the plate and, as it has for most of the weekend, solid pitching, defense let the team down by committing four errors.
Morehead State (0-5) kept the Gamecocks from any big innings, but Jacksonville State (3-2) bats accumulated 11 hits and the team scored in four of the seven frames.
Junior catcher
Peyton Slater continued her torrid batting, notching her fifth single of the season and her fourth straight game with a hit, with one out in the top of the first.
JSU got on the board after Brantly Bonds's two-out double drove in a run in the bottom of the inning.
MSU was dealt a blow when an injury forced coach
Samantha Jones to make a lineup change in the middle of the first and Jones felt that took the wind out of the team's sails.
"Today was just mentally challenging for them," she said. "But, for the most part, they responded with strength and humility."
The Gamecocks collected a trio of its in the second, but the Eagles clamped down on defense and forced the inning to end with all three batters still on base.
Jacksonville State added to its lead in the third after Bonds led off with a home run and a Chaney Phillips two-out double drove two more runs.
Morehead State put runners on base in both the fourth and fifth. In the former inning, senior first baseman
Alexis Strother doubled, freshman left fielder
Ieesha Christian walked and junior third baseman
Peyton Rose was hit by a pitch. Freshman pitcher
Madi Ogden picked up her first base hit of the season when she opened the fifth with a single to left field.
JSU extended its advantage to 5-0 when a Bonds sacrifice fly drove in Abbi Perkins in the bottom of the fourth. The Gamecocks capped off the scoring on a fielder's choice.
Slater, Strother, Christian and Ogden had MSU's four hits. Bonds led Jacksonville State with a 3-for-3, 3-RBI day at the plate. Phillips, Perkins and Keeli Bobbitt each added two hits.
Ogden went the distance in the circle and finished with six earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out one and walking two. She fell to 0-3 with the decision. JSU's Kat Carter improved to 1-1 with the win. She struck out three and walked one.
Despite the 0-5 start, Jones sees promise in her club.
"Those scores don't show the talent of this group," she said.
Morehead State is off until returning to the road for four games next Saturday and Sunday at the Red and Black Classic at Gardner-Webb. There the Eagles will face East Tennessee State and the host Bulldogs. The first game of the weekend will be versus ETSU on Saturday at 1 p.m.
