MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State and Rio Grande will play softball after all. Despite two previous postponements, the Eagles announced that they will host the RedStorm in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 3. Game one will start at 2 p.m.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play on Wednesday, April 13 and Monday, April 18. Morehead State (5-28) is 5-6 at home this season. It has also seen 15 games either postponed or canceled due to weather and field conditions, with 13 of those to have taken place on MSU's University Field. Rio Grande currently sports a 29-11 record.
Live stats will be available at a link yet to be established. However, the games will not be otherwise broadcast by MSU.
"We're excited about adding Rio Grande back onto the schedule," said Morehead State head coach
Samantha Jones. "They are the only team that did not have to have a make-up date with their conference due to the weather this season.
"We can expect Rio to compete as they are one of the top teams in their conference and always fighting for a conference championship," she added.
The contests will be in the middle of a seven-game home stand for the Blue and Gold. The Eagles will host Tennessee State the previous weekend and then Butler for a doubleheader the next day.
MSU and Rio Grande have played eight times, with the Eagles holding a 6-2 series edge, including a 4-0 mark at home. However, they have not met since 1993.
"It'll be a good test for our girls to maintain composure, overcome any challenges (they may face), stick to our game plans and hopefully excel in our at-bats and back up our pitchers defensively," Jones said.
Morehead State's next contest will be a three-game road series with Belmont, starting with a Saturday doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, with Sunday's solo contest slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
