Game one with UT Martin canceled
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The first game of the Morehead State-UT Martin softball series has been canceled. Saturday's schedule originally included a doubleheader starting at noon. During the week, it was changed to a single game at 3 p.m. and eventually moved to 5 p.m. on Saturday morning. However, MSU officials decided the field had sustained too much water to play.

The Ohio Valley Conference teams will now meet on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. For more information about viewing the games check the MSU website: https://msueagles.com/sports/softball/schedule?path=softball. Live stats will also be available at the link: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=383269.

"Today's game with UT Martin was canceled due to wet field conditions," said Paul Rhodes, MSU Tickets and Facilities Manager.

After multiple days of rain, cold weather and little to no sun, Saturday's game is the second schedule adjustment this week. Wednesday's doubleheader with Kentucky State also was postponed.

Weather has been such a problem that the Eagle softball team has only practiced twice outside since completing their three-game road series at Southeast Missouri on Sunday.

This season, Morehead State (2-25/1-11) has had 11 games either postponed or canceled due to weather. To date, MSU has only played six of its 15 originally-scheduled games at the University Field. The Eagles are 2-4 at home this spring.

Saturday's contest is the third consecutive OVC outing UT Martin (20-12/5-4) has lost due to weather. Wednesday's home doubleheader with Southeast Missouri also was washed out. According to the schedule on its website, those are the only three contests which have been canceled this year.

The weekend series was part of a 10-game home stand (the longest since 2019) for MSU, but that has now been shrunk to seven contests.

The Eagles and Skyhawks have met 75 times in their history dating back to 1992, but also have had series rained out in 2015 and 2017. In addition, the two did not play during the 1993 and 2020 seasons.

Host UTM won two of the three meeting last season, 7-0 on April 18 and 12-4 on April 17. MSU captured the first contest 3-1. The two last played in Morehead on April 22, 2018, with the squads splitting a doubleheader.

On Wednesday Morehead State will face Shawnee State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Eagles and Bears also had a February 22 twin bill at the University Field canceled. MSU will conclude its home stand with a three-game series next weekend against SIU Edwardsville.
