Student-Athletes and Teams Honored With Athletic Department's Highest Awards
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State athletics celebrated the accomplishments of its student-athletes and teams Monday night as everyone gathered for the end of the year banquet.

LAUGHLIN-MILLER AWARD - The Laughlin-Miller Award is awarded to one student-athlete who exemplifies athletic and academic excellence, as well as embodies community and campus involvement. The honored student-athlete is also regarded as a true team player. Being named to an All-American or All-Conference list will boost a nominee's status but is not required. It is considered the highest individual honor for the year. The award is named after former coaches Bob Laughlin and Len Miller.
WINNER: Joe Mushchong (Men's Golf) - Muschong captured the individual medalist honor at the 2022 OVC Championship and will be playing as an individual in an NCAA regional upcoming. He has been an OVC Scholar-Athlete and has consistently led the men's golf team in stroke average.

MISS EAGLE - Miss Eagle is awarded to a female student-athlete that dominated her sport and stands out within the Ohio Valley Conference and is often in the national spotlight.
WINNER: Olivia Lohmeier (Volleyball and Beach Volleyball) - Lohmeier helped the indoor Eagles to their 13th overall OVC title and was named First-Team All-OVC for the fourth straight season. She finished her career ranked second in career kills at Morehead State. In Beach, she finished with the program record for most wins at 53 and was named First-Team All-OVC for a second straight season.

MR. EAGLE - Mr. Eagle is awarded to a male student-athlete that dominated his sport and stands out within the Ohio Valley Conference or Pioneer football League and is often in the National spotlight.
WINNER: BJ Byrd (Football) - A five-time All-American, Byrd was named the PFL Offensive Player of the Year and also to the Academic All-PFL Team. He set numerous single-season records for the Eagles and led the nation (FCS) in catches per game. Byrd finished with 90 receptions for 1,313 yards and 13 touchdowns, all MSU records. 

EAGLE ELITE AWARDS - The Eagle Elite Award is awarded to four female and four male student-athletes of junior or above status, who exemplify true Morehead State pride and spirit, as well as embody community and campus involvement. These student athletes show hard work and dedication not only in their sport and to their team but in their academics and campus involvement as well. This award is new and has been created by student athletes as a way to acknowledge and appreciate their fellow student-athletes who embody these characteristics.
WINNERS: Sarah Black (Women's Golf), Peyton Slater (Softball), Amber Schifano (Rifle), Kate Larbes (Soccer) | John Bakke (Baseball), Jeremiah Scott (Football), Bryce Ward (Rifle), Ryan Gillum (Golf)

FEMALE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR - The Female Freshman of the Year Award is presented to a female freshman student athlete who had an outstanding performance in their first season as an Eagle.
WINNER: Maycie Welborn (Volleyball) - Welborn finished with 174 kills and 52 blocks, along with a .265 hitting percentage. She earned a starting role midway though the season and became one of the top freshmen hitters in the OVC.

MALE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR - The Male Freshman of the Year Award is presented to a male freshman student athlete who had an outstanding performance in their first season as an Eagle.
WINNER: Chance Harris (Football) - Harris finished third on the team in rushing yards and also scored two touchdowns. 

BEST VICTORIES - The Best Eagle Victory Awards of the Year go to four teams that showcased their talents and triumphed over their opponents.
WINNERS: Co-ed Cheerleading UCA National Championship, All-Girl Partner Stunt UCA National Championship, Joe Muschong individual victory at OVC Championship, Baseball's 9-run rally with two outs in 8th inning to beat Ohio 13-12. 

FEMALE SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR - 
The Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award is given to a senior female student athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.
WINNERS: Isabella Washka (Women's Golf), Raegan Alexander (Volleyball and Beach Volleyball)

MALE SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR - 
The Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award is given to a senior male student athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.
WINNER: Dalton Lewis (Football)

TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD -
 The Team Academic Award is given each year to the team with the highest overall GPA for the 2021 calendar year. This award is a very impressive award highlighting the importance of being a student-athlete, student being first and foremost.
WINNER: Women's Golf with a 3.72 GPA

TEAM COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD -
 The Team Community Service Award is presented to the team with the most recorded community service hours per person.
WINNER: Football

PENNY WARS -
 Each year the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee raises money to send veterans to the Ohio Valley Conference basketball tournament in Evansville, Ind. The Penny Wars trophy goes to the team that raised the most money and won this year's penny wars.
WINNER: Rifle
