Not meant to be: Softball doubleheader with Rio Grande canceled for the third (and final) time
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Rio Grande's nickname is the RedStorm, which seems appropriate when it comes to the team playing Morehead State in softball this spring, because for the third time a scheduled doubleheader between the two schools has been canceled due to potential storms coming to Morehead on Tuesday.

Previously, MSU was scheduled to host RGU on April 13 and April 18, but those games were postponed due to incoming weather and field conditions. This week's contest, slated for Tuesday at 2 p.m., has been canceled for good due to a forecast that is calling for a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms, potentially severe, and likely to include 20-30 mile per hour winds, according to Weather.com.

"I just spoke with the (Rio Grande) coach and with the thunderstorms that are coming in on Tuesday, we will have to cancel our doubleheader," MSU coach Samantha Jones wrote in an email.

The cancelations mark the 16th and 17th games lost or postponed this season due to weather. According to the best available information, and not counting the 2020 season wiped out due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 17 weather-impacted lost contests are one more than 2010, which is the next highest total in at least the last 13 years.

All but two of this year's cancellations/postponements were to have been played at MSU's University Field. Additionally, nearly all were mid-week games against non-conference opponents. The only one of those contests to have been rescheduled and remains on the calendar, was the March 8 doubleheader with Butler. The Bulldogs are slated to come to town on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. twin bill.

The Eagles will conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Murray State. The first contest will be on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET, with the conclusion coming on Sunday in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m. ET.
