MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State's final non-conference softball games of the season have been canceled. The Wednesday home doubleheader with Butler was eliminated from the schedule after both teams were concerned about field conditions following Tuesday's anticipated storm.
The twin bill was originally scheduled to have been played on March 8 and was one of only two series rescheduled. Combined with Tuesday's home doubleheader with Rio Grande, 19 games off the Eagles' slate have been erased.
"We are going to have to cancel tomorrow's softball games with Butler. With the storms coming in this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow morning, and the uncertainty of if or how much we might be able to play tomorrow, the teams decided it best to just go ahead and cancel the games," read an email from
Paul Rhodes, MSU's Tickets and Facilities Manager.
Weather and unplayable field conditions have ripped apart Morehead State's schedule.
Seventeen of the 19 washed out contests were to have been played at Morehead State. Excluding the Covid-19-impacted 2020 campaign, both the home and total numbers are the most on record according to available information. However, archival data on the amount of cancelations in school history is very limited.
The Butler doubleheader was to be MSU's final home games of the season. The Eagles finished their campaign at the University Field with a 6-8 mark, which is their highest winning percentage at the facility since the team went 13-8 in 2017. It is the second straight year in which the Blue and Gold only played 14 times on its field. In the last three years, only 30 of the club's 98 competitions have taken place in its ballpark. The Eagles are 15-53 on the road and 9-21 at home during that time.
Breaking the cancelations down by groups, Morehead State missed two of its 17 pre-season tournament games, 17 of its 31 home outings, 18 of its 35 non-conference contests, 16 of its 22 mid-week games and – with three competitions left on the schedule – one of its 28 Ohio Valley Conference matchups to date.
The numbers could even be increased. In one case, two sets of doubleheaders were scheduled for the same day. Shawnee State was on the original list for April 18, but pulled out and was replaced at the last minute by Rio Grande. However, weather eventually nullified playing that day.
In total, contests with Rio Grande (six), Butler (four), Dayton (two), Shawnee State (two), Kentucky State (two), East Carolina (one), Bryant (one) and UT Martin (one) make up the list of the outings not played.
Morehead State (7-34/6-18) has three games remaining on its schedule. This weekend the team will travel to Murray State for its final Ohio Valley Conference series. The Eagles enter in a must-win scenario if they are to advance to next week's OVC Tournament, which will be held May 11-14 in Oxford, Ala. MSU currently sits in ninth place in the league standings with only the top eight earning bids to the post-season event.
Morehead State and Murray State will play on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET and then conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
