CULTURES SERIES: Nolan Pierce Adjusted to Small-Town College Life After Moving From Urban Canadian Town
Finale in a series highlighting international student-athletes at Morehead State, their cultures, and why they chose to attend Morehead State. If you are an international student, there are wonderful resources to help you attend MSU. Click here for more information. This series was also being researched and written by an international student-athlete herself, Bridget Connolly from New Zealand, who finished her career at MSU this past season.

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Nolan Pierce is an international student from Whitby, Canada and is majoring in business. He is a sophomore on the men's golf team and chose to attend Morehead State because when he came on his visit, he liked the school but more importantly he made some good relationships with those who would be his future teammates.

Golf is a huge part of Pierce's life, and he has been playing since the age of thirteen. This passion for golf resulted in his move to another country to play as a D1 golfer at Morehead State. This was a big commitment, especially going from his home city of more than 100,000 to a town of less than 10,000 people. This resulted in a major culture shock, and it took him some time to adjust too. However, he has enjoyed being in Morehead and says his favorite part about Morehead is the people, as everyone is friendly and welcoming.

Throughout his two years as a student athlete at Morehead State, he says his biggest achievement is "maintaining a 4.0 GPA", which is a consequence of his dedication to his academic studies. This will help him with his future ambitions after graduation, which is to pursue a career overseas in the United Kingdom.

Not surprisingly COVID had a large impact on Pierce's life.

"It was much more difficult to go home, and I was limited on my travel back and forwards from America to Canada".

Alike other international students he used face time and social media to stay in touch with his family and friends and this helped with homesickness. Other hobbies Pierce has outside of golf include fishing, other sports and traveling.

To follow Nolan and the Morehead State men's golf team, the MSU athletics website will post live scoring on the men's golf page.
