Fiantaco Scores, but Soccer Falls 2-1 to Evansville Sunday

BOX SCORE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After a scoreless first half, the Morehead State soccer team was able to get a goal, but it could not overcome the two Evansville goals that followed, falling 2-1 in full time Sunday. Despite the loss, both the team and Head Coach Chris Fox are staying positive.

"I was very encouraged with our response following Thursday's game," said Fox. "We controlled large parts of the game and created really good opportunities; something that's difficult to do on the road. We're choosing to focus on the positives while understanding there is still much to improve."

In the first half, both sides pressured the other's defensive third, but were unable to find the back of the net. Hadley Cytron and Anna Lohrer both registered shots, but neither was on target. Michelle Jerantowski faced three shots from the Purple Aces, saving the only shot on target. Morehead State held the advantage in corner kicks in the first half three to one.

After halftime, Hadley Cytron nearly opened the scoring, but her shot glanced off the crossbar. Following a shot by Evansville, a corner kick resulted from a counterattack for the Eagles in the 56th minute. Cytron sent it in and Nicole Fiantaco was able to find the back of the net for the opening goal, her first of the season. Cytron's assist marked her second of the year.

It wasn't long before Evansville netted the equalizer; however, as Emily Ormson tied the match at one in the 62nd minute. Just six minutes later, the Purple Aces scored what proved to be the winner, as Sophia Rodil scored to give the opposition a 2-1 advantage.

The Eagles didn't go down without a fight, registering three shots in the final 10 minutes of the match, including one from Eli Soderberg that went off the post. Sejla Podzic had a shot that missed wide with less than a minute to go, resulting in a goal kick and allowing Evansville to escape with a victory.

Morehead State held the advantage in shots, 8-7, and also held position for 68% of the match.

With the loss, Morehead State fell to 1-3-0 on the season after winning their home opener over Central Michigan on August 18. Next up for the Eagles is a road tilt with VMI on Thursday, before returning home to MSU Soccer Field for a Sunday match vs. Queens (N.C.).
