A Summer Abroad: Basketball's Thelwell Relishes Opportunity to Play in Europe
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A member of the Morehead State basketball team hit the hardwood across the pond over the summer. Returning third-year guard Drew Thelwell recently returned from a summer of basketball in Belgium, an experience he defined as "once in a lifetime."

Thelwell was a member of the Global Sports Academy Select Team.

"Traveling to Belgium was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I've always wanted to travel the world playing the sport I love, so when the opportunity was presented, I jumped on it," Thelwell said. " My dream is to play professional basketball overseas eventually, and getting a taste of that gave me further motivation to one day achieve that dream. I was able to experience a different way of life, try new foods that I've never had before, see new places, and play basketball with other collegiate athletes which has given me a lifetime of memories and new friends."

Playing with new teammates over the summer will certainly help Thelwell in the upcoming 2022-23 season, as only four players from last season's team will be back at Johnson Arena this year. Despite all the turnover, the sophomore guard from Orlando is excited to hit the hardwood with his fellow Eagles this season.

"Although the experience was great, I'm excited to be back and ready to take on an exciting season with my team at Morehead State this season."

Morehead State opens the season with one of the blue bloods of college basketball -- the Indiana Hoosiers, in Bloomington on November 7. The Eagles' home opener is soon to follow, as the Pioneers of Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.) come to Morehead on November 10. OVC play opens just before the start of the new calendar year with a trip to Tennessee State on December 29.
