Volleyball Ventures to Michigan for A Trio of Matches

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- After opening the 2022 season with a pair of straight-set victories, the competition ramps up for the Morehead State volleyball team this weekend when the Eagles take on Loyola (Chicago), Michigan and Toledo at the Michigan Invitational.

Friday's action includes matches with Loyola at 10 a.m. ET and the host Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's Toledo tilt takes place at Noon. All matches are at Cliff Keen Arena with the UM match being aired on the Big 10 Network plus.

NOTABLE
- Senior setter Bridget Bessler earned her 11th career OVC Setter of the Week award this week and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the UNC Asheville Invitational. Bessler became the seventh setter in program history to achieve 3,000+ career assists, upping her total to 3,055 with an OVC high 74 handouts last weekend. Bessler ranks seventh in program in career assists. The Eagles have now earned 29 OVC Setter of the Week awards in the program's history.

- Sophomore right side Maycie Welborn was crowned OVC Offensive Player of the Week following her effort at the UNCA Tournament. Welborn landed 21 kills and hit an OVC best .472 with just four errors last weekend. She had 14 kills in the season opener versus Queens, one short of her career high. Her award marked the 71st all-time Player of the Week accolade for the program.

- Morehead State now has 158 total OVC weekly honors (Offensive, Defensive, Setter or Freshman/Newcomer) since 1989.

- Senior outside hitter Abby Hulsman now has eight consecutive matches with double-digit kills dating back to the final six last season and the first two this year. Hulsman pounded in a team-best 21 kills last weekend at UNCA. She now has 31 career double-digit kill efforts.

- Taking over at libero, senior Andrea Grimes produced 30 digs in the two matches at UNCA, including a career-high 19 versus Queens. 

- Redshirt sophomore middle McKenzee Wagener recorded five blocks in the season opener and now has 191 career total blocks. Last season, she averaged more than a block a set to rank among the OVC's top five blockers. 

- Freshman outside M.E. Hargan had a solid collegiate debut, nailing in 13 kills against Queens. On th weekend, she hit .318 with 20 kills. 

- The Eagles hit .319 as a team and averaged 14 digs per set on opening weekend. Last season, MSU led the OVC in kills, kills per set, assists, assists per set and lowest opponent hitting percentage.

- Morehead State has a rich volleyball tradition that boasts the only Ohio Valley Conference program to eclipse 1,000 victories in a program's lifetime. Currently, MSU has a 1,208-654 lifetime record since 1972. The Eagle program has achieved 33 seasons of 20+ wins and 40 seasons finishing above .500. In addition, head coach Dr. Jaime Gordon has a 348-250 record in his 20th season and is the all-time winningest head coach in any sport at Morehead State. He also serves as the department's Director of Athletics. 

- MSU has only ever had three players on its all-time rosters hail from Michigan. The latest was Hope Rillema (Whitehall) from 2013-16. The other two (Jennifer Brining and Debbie Bryant) attended MSU in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Meanwhile, Ohio represents the highest total of players ever to play at Morehead State with 62. Illinois has produced 10 Eagles, but no Eagle has ever hailed from Chicago, Ill., or Toledo, Ohio.
