MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The No. 16 Morehead State Rifle Team opened its 2022-23 season Friday by taking a tightly-contested match over visiting Georgia Southern at Button Rifle Range.
The MSU Eagles slipped past the GSU Eagles, ranked No. 17, 4,670-4,661.
In Air Rifle, MSU was just five points shy of tying the school record (2,363), and the overall score missed the school record by just 10 points.Â
Sophomore
Andrew Morris paced the home team with a career-best 591 in Air and added a 579 in Smallbore to total 1170. While not in the team score, freshman
Holly Freeman showed maximum potential in her college debut, equaling Morris' scores for an 1170.
Also in Air, freshman
Adrianna Beard (589), graduate
Bryce Ward (589) and senior
Grace Weber (589) helped the cause, while junior transfer
Cassidy Wilson fired a 586 in her first Eagle showdown.
On the Smallbore range, Ward led with a 580, while Freeman and Ward had their 579s and senior
Elizabeth Plecity finished with a 579 as well.
GSU's Addy Burrow led all shooters with a 1179 aggregate (590 AR, 589 SB). The teams line up again Saturday to conclude a weekend series. First shots are at 8 a.m. ET.
