BOX SCORE
MOREHEAD,Ky. -- Freshman forward
Hedda Ornberg scored her third career goal at Southern Indiana Sunday, but it was a case of too little, too late as the Morehead State soccer team absorbed a 2-1 defeat to the Screaming Eagles. An own goal surrendered by MSU in the first half ultimately ended up as the deciding factor.
MSU was saddled with its first loss in OVC play, dipping to 2-1-2, and the Eagles are 3-5-5 overall.
USI grabbed the lead in 25th minute as goalkeeper
Erin Gibbs tried to clear the ball in front of the net. Unfortunately it ricocheted off an Eagle defender and bounced to the back of the net.
The host USI squad took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute on a through pass and scoring strike by Pilar Torres.
In the 79th minute, MSU defender
Madelyn Mozeleski played a solid length-of-the-field pass to Ornberg, who slipped past her defender and nailed a shot past USI goalkeeper Anna Marklund. Mozeleski collected her first assist of the season.
Morehead State only allowed the one shot to USI and had a 9-1 shot advantage, including three chances in the final two minutes. MSU also had a 6-3 upper-hand in corner kicks and dominated possession, 64 percent to 36 percent.
The Eagles are idle during the week and return home to host Southeast Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET
