Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight, Defeats SIUE in Five Set Thriller Friday

MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State volleyball team knocked off the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars in five sets (17-25, 28-26, 25-15, 12-25, 15-13) Friday at home at Johnson Arena.

The conference victory improved Morehead State's record to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in OVC play, marking a five-match winning streak overall and eight straight at home. 

The Eagles were led by a double-double from Irene Wogenstahl, who registered 11 kills and 10 blocks on the day while M.E. Hargan added 21 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Peighton Isley led all players with 29 digs with Shea Hefner and Courtney Fitzgerald in double figures as well.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Eagles fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-17. Morehead State trailed by as many as eight points as SIU-Edwardsville grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was tied up 10 times before the Cougars took control.

SET 2 | Morehead State responded to pick up a 28-26 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Eagles survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured 12 lead changes and was tied 17 times. Neither team led by more than three points along the way. Morehead State's front row blocked six SIU-Edwardsville attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 SIU-Edwardsville attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 3 | Morehead State grabbed another win in set three to take a 2-1 match lead. The Eagles took the set 25-15. Morehead State took the lead for good at 12-11 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Eagles took over the lead. Morehead State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four SIU-Edwardsville attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 11 SIU-Edwardsville attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Morehead State couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Cougars forced a fifth set with a 25-12 fourth-set win. The Eagles trailed by as many as 13 points as SIU-Edwardsville grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 and Morehead State wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up five times before the Cougars took over.

SET 5 | Morehead State took a two sets to one lead and held off SIU-Edwardsville's rally attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2. The Eagles took set five and the game despite falling behind by as many as six points at 7-1 before fighting back to secure the victory. Morehead State jumped in front at 14-13 and held on to take the set. Blocks were key, as Morehead State blocked four shots in the final set. 

Three road matches await MSU next week, as the Eagles begin the week at Tennessee Tech before playing Tennessee State next weekend.
