Men's Basketball Cruises Past St. Mary-Of-The-Woods With Five Double Figure Scorers

BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
Morehead State Men's Basketball had five double-digit scorers and established several season and career bests to cruise over the St. Mary-Of-The-Woods (Ind.) Pomeroys 102-33 at home Thursday for the Eagles' sixth straight victory.

The Eagles (8-3) were led by Riley Minix, who put together his fourth career MSU double-double with 24 points (18 in the first half) and 11 rebounds. Kalil Thomas tacked on 19 points and Eddie Ricks III helped out with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Jordan Lathon also had a double-double, his second, with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Zach Iyememi scored a season-high 11 points off the bench.

Morehead State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up a season-high 28 assists on 40 made field goals - the most helpers since also having 28 against Kentucky State last season. Individually, Drew Thelwell dished out the most for the Eagles with a career-high 13 assists, which was just three short of the program single-game record.

The Morehead State defense held the Pomeroy shooters, who were missing four normal starters, to only 18 percent (13-of-70) from the field, including just 16 percent (5-of-30) from three-point range.

The Eagles also took advantage of a height mismatch, securing a 69-27 rebound cushion. It's the most team boards since Dec. 28, 2016 when that squad had 76 rebounds versus Asbury (Ky.). MSU also swatted away a season-high 11 blocked shots.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 23-12 advantage, Morehead State went on a 13-0 run with 11:23 left in the first half to increase its lead to 36-12. The Eagles then added nine points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 52-19 advantage. Morehead State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 52 points.

Following intermission, Morehead State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-26 before going on a 16-0 run to grow the lead to 86-26 with 8:45 to go in the contest. The Eagles kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 102-33 win. Morehead State took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 50 points in the lane.
