EVANSVILLE, IN -- Women's basketball shot only 27 percent from the field and fell 58-46 to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on the road Saturday.
Veronica Charles led the Eagles with 17 points and Hallie Rhodes tacked on six points and three blocks, while Valentina Saric helped out with nine points and two steals off the bench.
Led by Rhodes' three offensive rebounds, Morehead State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in five second chance points.
The Morehead State defense held Southern Indiana shooters to just 33.9 percent from the field, including 23.8 percent from three-point range.
The Eagles travel to Little Rock, Ark. for the first time this season on Thursday. Tip-off against the Trojans is slated for 12:30 PM.Â
How It Happened
Morehead State entered the second quarter tied at 7-7 after a tightly contested first period. Morehead State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down one shot to account for three of its seven points.
The Screaming Eagles then took control in the second quarter and the Eagles entered halftime behind 22-17.
Southern Indiana continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 27-17 advantage before Morehead State went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Sophie Benharouga, to trim its deficit to 27-24 with 5:49 to go in the third. Southern Indiana countered and stretched its lead to 38-27 heading into the fourth. Morehead State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.
Morehead State kept the Screaming Eagles from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Charles' three, to shrink the deficit to 41-35 with 7:07 to go in the contest. Southern Indiana responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way. Morehead State took advantage of five Southern Indiana turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
