MOREHEAD, Ky. – Softball rallied in the sixth inning to try and make up an eight run deficit, but saw their rally fall short in a 9-5 defeat against Southern Indiana.
Peyton Jordan continued her productive series by driving a two-run homerun in the sixth, while
Emily Williams wrapped up her first OVC series with three more RBI, capped off by her second homerun in as many games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dueling shutout innings, USI broke the ice in the second with an RBI single, but
Jessie Begley worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam to limit the damage.
A near double-play almost ended the top of the third, but the throw from
Peyton Jordan skipped away and USI took advantage with a two run single, expanding their lead to 3-0.
More defensive miscues plagued the Eagles in the fourth, where USI added another two unearned runs to take a 5-0 advantage.
Emily Williams doubled home
Peyton Jordan in the bottom of the fourth to break the shutout, but the Eagles stranded a pair, keeping the score 5-1.
USI tacked on two run triple in the fifth and added another two runs in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 9-1.
Kirya Kingery opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and scored when
Peyton Jordan smacked a two-run homerun to left.
Taylor Rhea walked and
Emily Williams followed with another homerun to cut the lead to 9-5.
Erin Boyle followed with a triple, but was stranded on third to end the rally.
After holding the Screaming Eagles scoreless in the top of the seventh, Morehead State went down in order to end the game.
UP NEXT
The Eagles travel to Johnson City, Tenn. Tuesday for a midweek clash against East Tennessee State. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 2:00 PM.
