MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Director of Athletics Dr. Jaime Gordon has been appointed as the Executive Director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Gordon will continue to serve in his leadership role with Morehead State until June 30 before assuming his new position with the AVCA on July 1.
Gordon, who completed his 20th season as head volleyball coach in 2022, assumed the interim Director of Athletics role at Morehead State in March of 2019 and was appointed full-time AD in January of 2020. After 381 victories (the most of any head coach in any sport in MSU history), Gordon stepped aside as head volleyball coach following the 2022 season.
"Morehead State has meant so much to my family and me for the past 20 years. It is, and will forever remain, a part of who I am and aspire to be. I am blessed to have worked with so many amazing people to serve our students, who inspire me daily. I am grateful for the support and understanding of Dr. Morgan and Vice President Mast during this transition. Their leadership and encouragement have been exemplary. It is difficult to step away from something you love and respect so much. The opportunity to serve the sport of volleyball in this capacity is an honor and the best for my family and me. My commitment to Morehead State, the athletic department, and the volleyball program will never fade and is a part of my identity. Once an Eagle…ALWAYS an Eagle!"Â
As athletics director, Gordon successfully navigated the department through the challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic. During that time, he also built new partnerships throughout the department, including UK Sports Medicine - improving and expanding the athletic training and orthopedic coverage, Crossover Marketing - building a unique corporate partnership initiative resulting in significant revenue growth, and TimelyMD - designing a cutting-edge program to provide student-athletes counseling, crisis management, and on-demand mental health assistance. He has also spearheaded a new approach to athletic fundraising, hospitality, development, and community philanthropy which has yielded successful results - including the largest single gift in MSU Athletics history.
He has hired five (cross country/track, baseball, softball women's basketball and soccer) head coaches and helped to ensure team's and department staffing is efficient with student-athlete wellbeing at the heart of decisions.
While serving dual roles, the volleyball program enjoyed similar success, earning an overall record of 74-40 (51-17 OVC). This included two OVC regular season championships, an OVC Tournament championship, and a first round victory in the NCAA Tournament.
Gordon concluded his MSU indoor volleyball coaching career with a 360-266 record, which included 12 20-win campaigns, three Ohio Valley Conference Tournament titles, three NCAA Tournament berths (with a first-round win in 2021), four total postseason appearances and nine OVC regular season titles.
"The role of executive director requires a unique combination of coaching and administrative experience. Dr. Jaime Gordon comes to the AVCA as a dedicated and successful professional in both spaces," said Keegan Cook, president of the AVCA Board of Directors and head women's volleyball coach at Minnesota. "Jaime's decision to pivot from his role as a successful sitting D1 athletic director and dedicate himself wholly to the AVCA is one that I certainly respect. I feel this is a moment of celebration that the sport of volleyball and the AVCA has grown to a position where we can attract a candidate as qualified and experienced as Jaime."
The AVCA, an educationally based nonprofit headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, is the largest and most diverse association of volleyball coaches in the world. With a broad mandate to develop the sport, the AVCA provides leadership, recognition, advocacy and professional development opportunities to over 8,200 volleyball coaches. Members include college, high school, club, and youth coaches, as well as a wide variety of product and service providers.Â
