Vinson's Go-Ahead Homer Caps Late Rally as Baseball Beats Univ. of the Cumberlands

MOREHEAD, Ky. --The Morehead State baseball team rallied from down 7-5 in the seventh inning to defeat the University of the Cumberlands Patriots 8-7 Tuesday. Chase Vinson's two-run blast in the eighth gave the Eagles a lead they didn't relinquish in the ninth, as Luke Lyman came on and recorded his first collegiate save. 

Trevor Callahan (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Morehead State (27-16). The right-hander wcame on and recorded the final out of the eighth for the Eagles. Hunter Porter also made an impact on the mound for the Eagles, throwing three innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on two hits, with five walks and two strikeouts.

Offensively, the Eagles were paced by Nick Gooden, who had a three-hit game with an RBI. Jackson Feltner posted a multi-hit game with an RBI double, and Jacob Ferry went 1-3 with an RBI double as well. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Morehead State got an RBI single from Becker, scoring Jackson Feltner from second base.

The Eagles kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the second. Morehead State picked up two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of Guzman, which brought the Eagles lead to 3-2.

Morehead State's lead had disappeared once the seventh inning came around and turned into a 7-3 deficit, when the Eagles cut that deficit to 7-5. The Eagles recorded two runs, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of junior Jacob Ferry.

Morehead State kept the Patriots off the board before taking the lead in the eighth. The three-run frame for the Eagles was puncuated by a two-run homer from Vinson. bringing the Morehead State advantage to 8-7. The score remained 8-7 for the rest of the game, as the Eagles held on for the win.

» Morehead State's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed three runs across.
» Morehead State went 3-for-9 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» Morehead State pitchers limited the Patriots to just 2-for-11 (.182) with runners in scoring position..
» The Eagles drew eight walks in the game.

Morehead State is back in action tomorrow evening, as Eastern Kentucky comes to town for the first time since 2021.
