Volleyball off to 4-0 Start After 3-0 Sweep of Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV --The Morehead State volleyball team secured a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-22, 25-23) against the Marshall Thundering Herd Thursday on the road at Cam Henderson Center.

The non-conference victory improved Morehead State's overall record to 4-0 on the season, and the Eagles have yet to drop a set this season. 

The Eagles offense was paced by Maycie Welborn, who finished with 13 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .565, and by Irene Wogenstahl, who had 12 while hitting .500. Amelia Nott posted eight kills as well.

Defensively, Morehead State got eight digs from Peighton Isley, seven from Courtney Fitzgerald, six from Shea Hefner, and five from Brenna Bommer. 

Game Notes

» Courtney Fitzgerald recorded the team's lone ace in the win.
» Morehead State never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-17.
» As a team, Morehead State hit .319 with 47 kills. 
» Morehead State got a team-high eight digs from Peighton Isley.
» Morehead State attackers were helped by a match-high 39 assists from Brenna Bommer, a new season-high for her. 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Eagles won the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-17. Morehead State led by nine points at 21-12 before finishing off the set, collecting 16 kills in the process.

SET 2 | Morehead State won the second set 25-22 to promptly grab a 2-0 lead. The Eagles grabbed the set propelled by a solid showing on the attacking side. Morehead State put together a .343 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands one time, the Eagles took control for good at 11-10 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 3 | Morehead State then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Eagles took the lead for good at 21-20 in a set that showcased two lead changes before Morehead State took over in the second half of the stanza. They then carried that lead to a 25-23 set win, racking up 17 kills over the course of the set.

Morehead State is back in action tomorrow, playing a doubleheader vs. Akron and Coppin State.
