MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Volleyball put on a defensive clinic against Eastern Illinois Friday evening at Johnson Arena, turning back 18 Panther attempts as the Eagles closed their home schedule and celebrated Senior Day with a 3-1 triumph.
MSU led 22-17 late in the first set but a 6-0 EIU run turned the tide, and the Panthers claimed the opener 25-23. But, then the defense stepped up. EIU managed to land 25 kills the rest of the match but made 23 errors, including negative or .000 attack totals in sets two and three combined. MSU closed the match with 25-11, 25-15, 25-17 wins.
MSU's (14-13/10-6 OVC) 18 blocks was the most by an Eagle team in eight seasons, tying the 2016 squad's 18 against Tennessee Tech on Oct. 28 of the year. Sophomore
Amelia Nott contributed heavily to the cause, notched a career-high 11 blocks, including 10 block assists (which ranks fourth in single-match program history).
Maycie Welborn and
Sydney Wyman each swatted six EIU shots, while
M.E. Hargan and
Irene Wogenstahl had five blocks apiece.Â
Offensively, setter
Sydney Sennett turned in her ninth career double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs. Setter
Brenna Bommer handed out the remaining 26 assists as MSU landed 53 kills and hit .237.Â
Wyman was indefensible, smacking down 11 kills with zero errors for a career-best .733 hitting percentage, while Welborn reached double figures for the seventh time in eight matches with a team-high 13 terminations. Wogenstahl added 10 kills.
Hargan nearly missed a double-double with nine kills, and libero
Peighton Isley led the Eagles with 18 digs.
Courtney Fitzgerald made it back-to-back double-digit dig matches with 12. MSU also registered 10 service aces.
Morehead State will close the regular season on Tuesday and Wednesday at Southern Indiana.
