BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
Led by season-high kill totals from senior Maycie Welborn and graduate student Irene Wogenstahl, plus a double-double by sophomore setter Sydney Sennett, Morehead State volleyball fended off host Western Illinois Thursday night, defeating the Leathernecks 3-1 at Western Hall.

MSU raced out to a fast 25-16 win in the opening set, then used a 10-1 run to rally for a 26-24 triumph in set two. WIU claimed set three 25-17, but MSU fended off a furious late rally in the fourth, winning 26-24 again.

Welborn and Wogenstahl each pounded in 16 kills. Wogenstahl also hit .300, while Welborn was at .270. Sennett produced 26 assists and had a career-high 13 digs.

Meanwhile, sophomore Amelia Nott landed 11 kills and junior M.E. Hargan nearly had her seventh double-double in the last eight outings with nine kills and 15 digs. Senior libero Peighton Isley led the team with 16 of the Eagles' 84 digs, while sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald scooped up 11. That's the team's second highest dig production this fall.

The Eagles had consistent production on offense in all four sets, smacking 19, 18, 12, and 16 kills, respectively in the four frames. But the first and fourth frames featured just five errors each.

MSU also did an admirable job at the net on defense with 12 total blocks. Nott's five led the team, but Welborn, junior Sydney Wyman and sophomore Hollan Everett spiked back four WIU attempts.

Keyana Cruse led the home team with 20 kills and 15 digs.

Morehead State and WIU will meet again on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
