Football Tripped Up at Davidson, Falling 31-14

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State football had many opportunities Saturday at PFL foe Davidson, but the Eagles committed some costly mistakes and the Wildcats' rushing attack, which leads the nation, took advantage, as the home team put a damper on MSU's PFL title hopes with a 31-14 victory.

Davidson scored on a 55-yard run early in the first quarter, intercepted MSU QB Carter Cravens on the Eagles' first offensive play, and scored on a 28-yard pass moments later to lead 14-0 right off the bat. While MSU fought back to tie the game 14-14 later, the Wildcats recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and basically ran the entire fourth quarter clock down before scoring the game's final touchdown with less than a minute to play.

The Eagles' three-game winning streak was halted as MSU fell to 6-4 and 4-2 in the PFL.

Davidson held the ball on offense for more than double what MSU managed (43:53 to 17:07). The Wildcats rushed for 314 of their 408 total yards and held MSU to 192 total yards.

Bright spots did come though as three Eagle defenders had career-highs in tackles. Safety Matthew McClelland led the team with 18 total stops, including nine solo tackles. Linebacker Dillon Schobourgh notched 16 tackles, while lineman Gabe Whittington totaled 11.

On offense, wide receiver Nate Garnett had another big day, with 124 yards on six catches. His 88-yard touchdown from Cravens with 5:02 left in the second quarter completed the Eagles' 14-point rally. That tied the pair's long pass for the year as they also connected on an 88-yard score at Dayton.

The Wildcats eventually drove down and kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, and MSU could not score again.

Cravens had 205 passing yards but was picked off twice and lost a fumble in the end zone for Davidson's score.

The Eagles are back on the road next Saturday as they travel to Drake for a 1 p.m. ET.
