Big Games from Novik, Charles, Rhodes Not Enough in Women's Hoops' Loss to UT Martin

MARTIN, TN --Katie Novik, Veronica Charles and Hallie Rhodes combined to score 41 of Morehead State's 54 total points, but the Eagles fell to the UT Martin Skyhawks 70-54 on the road Saturday.

The Eagles (13-12, 8-6 OVC) had three players score in double figures, led by Novik, who had 19 points and four assists. Charles tacked on 12 points and four steals and Rhodes helped out with 10 points, four assists and two blocks.

Led by Blessing King's four offensive rebounds, Morehead State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.

Morehead State did a great job disrupting UT Martin shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. King's three rejections led the way individually for the Eagles.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-2, Morehead State went on a 6-0 run with 4:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Novik, to take an 8-7 lead. The Eagles then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-8.

The Eagles fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-25 by the time halftime rolled around.

UT Martin continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-30 advantage before Morehead State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Skylar Barnes, to tie things up at 35 with 6:18 to go in the third. The Eagles could not advance their rally further as the Skyhawks took a 52-38 lead into the fourth quarter. Morehead State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.

Morehead State fired away from deep in the fourth quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points, but it was ultimately not enough in the loss.
