MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Riley Minix secured his 15th double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, but the Morehead State men's basketball team fell to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 80-73 at home Tuesday.
The loss ended an 18-game home winning streak for the Eagles, who hadn't lost in Johnson Arena since Jan. 14, 2023.
The Eagles (20-8, 11-4 OVC) had four players score in double figures, led by Minix. Kalil Thomas added 14 points and seven rebounds and Drew Thelwell chipped in as well with 13 points, eight assists and two steals.
Morehead State did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 16 assists while turning the ball over just seven times.
But, the Eagles couldn't slow down USI's Jeremiah Hernandez who scored 28 points. AJ Smith added 18 points and nine rebounds. The Eagles were also out-rebounded for the second straight contest, 34-23.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-3, Morehead State went on a 7-0 run with 18:20 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Thomas, to take a 10-5 lead. The Eagles then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 31-30 advantage. Morehead State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 31 points.
Southern Indiana proceeded to take a 50-44 lead before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Thelwell's three, to even the score at 50 all with 11 minutes to go in the contest. The Eagles could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Screaming Eagles outscored them 30-23 the rest of the way to hand Morehead State the 80-73 loss.
