MOREHEAD, KY -- The Morehead State women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench, but fell 72-64 to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles at home Tuesday.
The Eagles (13-13, 8-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Matilda Soderlund, who had 23 points. Katie Novik added 11 points, six assists and three steals and Blessing King added six points and 18 rebounds.
Led by King's eight offensive rebounds, Morehead State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
How It Happened
Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Southern Indiana kept adding to that lead, building a 31-17 advantage before Morehead State went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Soderlund, to narrow its deficit to 31-24. The Eagles continued to chip away, reducing the Southern Indiana lead to 33-28 heading into the break.
Southern Indiana continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-37 advantage before Morehead State went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 51-42 with 10 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Southern Indiana kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 57-42 advantage before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Soderlund's three, to shrink the deficit to 57-48 with 7:10 to go in the contest. The Eagles kept their comeback going, but Southern Indiana managed to hold on for the 72-64 win. Morehead State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 22 total points.
