Men's Hoops Closes Week Hosting Eastern Illinois Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. --  Late night with the Eagles. Morehead State men's basketball will be in the national spotlight Thursday when the Eagles host OVC rival SIUE in an ESPNU game tipping off at 9 p.m. ET at Johnson Arena.

With a win Saturday, point guard Drew Thelwell will be the winningest individual player in program history. The program standard for success is 87 by Terrence Hill from 2008-09 to 2011-12, which Thelwell tied Thursday vs. SIUE.

Morehead State enters the game on a six-game winning streak overall this season and a six-game winning streak in the series with Eastern Illinois. EIU's last win in Morehead was Jan. 4, 2018.

The game can also be heard on the Eagle Sports Radio Network (WIVY-96.3 FM flagship station as well as WGOH in Grayson, Ky.) with Chuck Mraz and Drew Barnette. It is also available on MSUEagles.com. ESPN+ has the game as well, with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin.

NOTABLE
• Morehead State, the OVC's only remaining team in Kentucky, is easily the winningest Division I MBB program in the state in the past four seasons with 87 wins. In that span, MSU has 12 more wins than the next closest, University of Kentucky.

• MSU's current 17-game home winning streak ranks tied for third among all Division I programs.

• A win Saturday would also equal the best 25-game record in program history. The 1983-84 team was 20-5.  

• MSU has now won double digit OVC games in four consecutive seasons, marking just the second time in program history for 4+ straight 10+ win OVC seasons (2007-08 through 2011-12). 

• A win Saturday would give the Eagle program four straight 20+ win seasons, which has never happened before in MSU history. 

• MSU's 10-1 record after 11 OVC games is the third best OVC start in program history. The 1983-84 team has the school standard for best OVC at 12-1. the 2009-10 team was 11-1 after 12 games.

• MSU ranks No. 1 in the OVC in field goal accuracy and No. 1 in field goal defense.

• In OVC games only, Riley Minix is the conference's leading scorer on average, putting in 22.1 in OVC games.

Drew Thelwell ranks first in the nation in fewest fouls per minutes played. He has played 804 minutes this season and only been whistled for 14 fouls, or only a foul every 57 minutes. In his career, Thelwell has more many more games played (104) than fouls (84). In fact, Thelwell has only committed one foul in the last six games and 208 minutes on the floor.

Riley Minix has 10 20+ point efforts this season, including five of the last six games, and has now scored 2,513 career collegiate points to go along with 1,271 career rebounds. He has also scored 30+ twice this year, including Thursday vs. SIUE. 

Riley Minix is on the Lou Henson Award Watch list, an accolade honoring the nation's top player from Mid-Major conferences.

Riley Minix has recorded 69 career double-doubles in his time at MSU (OVC-best 11) and Southeastern (Fla.) (58). An NAIA All-American, Minix was also the 2022-23 NAIA Academic All-American of the Year.

• While Drew Thelwell has been known for his distributing ability, he scored 17 against SIUE Thursday, which marked his highest point total in OVC games this year. He ranks first in the OVC and 10th nationally with 151 assists. His assist total is 56 higher than the next ranked OVC player.

Drew Thelwell's 151 assists is the 11th best single-season total in program history.

Kalil Thomas has made 129 career three-pointers in just his two seasons at MSU, which ranks 13th on the program career list. In his career, Thomas has drained 223 triples.
