Late Scoring Flurry By Eastern Illinois Sinks Softball in 6 Innings in Game 2

GAME 2 | Eastern Illinois 14, Morehead State 5

MOREHEAD, KY --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Morehead State on Saturday. The Eagles plated five runs on eight hits, but could not hold the Eastern Illinois Panthers at bay, and were bested 14-5 in six innings.

All three Eagle pitchers saw time in the circle. Freshman Addie Stem (5-13) started and took the loss in the circle for Morehead State (11-25, 5-18). She went three innings, allowing six hits and eight runs (just six earned) with one strikeout and five walks. Sophomore Jessie Begley followed and threw one inning. Panther batters accumulated two hits and scored four runs (all earned) in her time in the circle. Begley had one walk and no strikeouts. Freshman Cassiti Baroni finished the contest. She pitched two innings, yielding three hits, two runs (both earned), while walking three without a strikeout.

Seven Eagles collected hits, led by Sela Pickford's 2-fore-3, two-run performance. Senior Peyton Jordan finished 1-for-3 with a run. Freshman Kendra Lewis was 1-for-1 with two runs. Juniior Ilencia Lightbody added a 1-for-3, 3-RBI performance. Sophomore Taikibrea Campbell was 1-for-3 with two RBI; while junior Samantha Cervantes finished 1-for-3. Senior Becca Crawford also collected her second career hit, with a fourth-inning to center field.

Eastern Illinois (34-15/18-5) ended the game with 11 hits. Kendall Grover (three), Rachel Kaufman (two), Karson Davey (two) and Aryn Henke (two) each finished with at least two. Henke drove in four runs, with Kaufman recording three and Grover two to pace the Panthers. Henke, Sophia Olman and Marama Makea each scored three times. Davey crossed home plate twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Sophomore Taikibrea Campbell drove in two runs for Morehead State with a single, that scored freshman Sela Pickford and freshman Kendra Lewis.

Eastern Illinois tallied three runs in the top of the second and two more in the third to take the lead. 

The Eagles lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 7-2. Junior Ilencia Lightbody's bases-clearing double was the offense in a three-run inning for Morehead State, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the Panthers. The Eagles were unable to get any closer, as Eastern Illinois added seven runs to their tally on the way to a 14-5 final.

EIU scored two in the fifth and five in the sixth to bring the game to an early end.
