Eastern Kentucky Softball Doubleheader Canceled

4/29/2024 11:24:00 PM

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Twenty days after the home softball doubleheader between Morehead State and archrival Eastern Kentucky was originally scheduled, MSU officials have announced that the games have been canceled. The two foes were set to play a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Eagles' University Field beginning at 1 p.m., but incoming weather forced the teams to call off the twin bill. Both contests were to be broadcast on ESPN+.

The original schedule had the teams meeting on April 10.

"Due to the forecast of rain for the entire day, both teams felt it was in their best interest to forgo playing Tuesday's doubleheader," said MSU Tickets and Facilities Manager Paul Rhodes.

Morehead State (11-26/5-19) and Eastern Kentucky (37-8/18-3) both had key conference series upcoming this weekend, which also factored into the cancelation. Due to the lateness of the season and the proximity of the aforementioned games, rescheduling was eliminated as an option.

It is only the fourth and fifth games erased off MSU's 2024 schedule, all of which were slated to be played in Morehead. They included a March 6 outing with Bowling Green and an April 16 doubleheader with Youngstown State. Only the BGSU tilt was lost due to the weather. The Eagles had just two games washed out last year, but 19 contests were eliminated in 2022 in what is believed to be an all-time high.

It will be only the second year since the series began in 1993 that the two foes will not meet. The only other season came during Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020. EKU leads the all-time matchups 67-26.

Last year, the Colonels defeated MSU in Richmond, Ky., 5-4 and 8-0 (in five innings) on April 19; but the Eagles won the lone meeting in 2022, 3-1, which took place in Morehead on March 16.

MSU finishes its home slate with a 4-10 record, while EKU is 14-3 in road outings this spring. The Colonels will host Lipscomb in their final regular season contests with a doubleheader slated for Thursday and a single game on Friday.

The Eagles will conclude their regular season this weekend at SIUE needing to sweep the Cougars to earn a berth to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament which will run from May 8-11 in Peoria, Ill.
