COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Morehead State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Eagle baseball team fell to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 4-3 Sunday in the series finale.
Sophomore Carter Owens (2-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Morehead State (17-14, 4-5). Junior Will Grimmett was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 3.1 shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out two.
Offensively, the Eagles were paced by senior Ryley Preece, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Hayden Robbins furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4. Isaias Guzman also chipped in for Morehead State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate with a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Junior Hunter Thomas came across to score the lone run of the inning for Morehead State and get them on the board.
The Eagles kept the deficit at 3-1 before closing the gap further in the eighth. Morehead State scored a run when senior Ryan Grabosch drew a walk from sophomore Brody Lanham that scored Nick Gooden, which tightened the Golden Eagles lead to 3-2.
Tennessee Tech built their lead to 4-2 before the Morehead State offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 4-3 in the ninth. The Eagles notched a run on Preece's leadoff home run off Lanham. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
