MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State freshman women's golfer
Tavia Burgess scored a top-20 finish in her first-ever collegiate tournament, and the Morehead State women's golf team opened 2024-25 with an eighth place showing at the Golfweek Fall Challenge in Pawley's Island, S.C.
Burgess, from Mather, Calif., hovered right around par the entire event, finally finishing at plus-2 with a 71-71-73--215 and a 18th place showing. She concluded ranked fifth in birdies during the event with 11.
MSU totaled rounds of 291-294-295--880. The Eagles have now played in this event four consecutive seasons, and this marked MSU's best finish in those four chances.
"I am proud of how our team competed this week," said head coach
Stephanie Barker. "Everyone contributed, and we really played some solid golf. This is a course where you can capitalize on good shots and make a lot of birdies, but it can also be quite penalizing. Overall we navigated the course quite well. Tavia had a strong first tournament as a freshman with a top-20 finish against nationally ranked players."
Sophomore
Isabella Wiley was not far behind, in 26th place with a 71-77-71--219. Junior
Tuva Marie Isebakke also had a pair of identical scores and finished in 26th as well. She carded scores of 74-71-74--219.
"Tuva and Isabella also had a great tournament as well," said Barker.
Junior
Amelia Rae Greenlee (80-75-77--232) and senior
MacKenzie Moore (75-78-81--234) rounded out MSU's five-player lineup. Freshman
Ineke Brynard played as an individual in her first collegiate action and fashioned a 78-83-84--245.
Isebakke and Wiley ranked among the top five players overall in number of pars.
Morehead State finished ahead of fellow Ohio Valley Conference team Tennessee Tech, while Campbell won the team title at minus-2.
