BOX SCORE

RICHMOND, Ky. --
Morehead State football gave rival Eastern Kentucky a tough battle Saturday night at Roy Kidd Stadium, but the host Colonels ultimately overpowered MSU 42-13.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead on Thomas Schwartz V's 31-yard field goal with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter before the teams had to endure an hour-and-a-half weather delay. When the teams returned at 7:56 p.m. ET, EKU pushed ahead 14-3 with two touchdowns within a two-minute span to end the first quarter.

The Eagles crept back to 14-10, their closest deficit, with 11:59 ticks left in the second frame when running back Isaac Stopke scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard jaunt, helped by a final push from his offensive lineman, freshman Jacob Ziegler.

But, the Colonels were able to take a 21-10 halftime lead on a 27-yard touchdown pass. After a shortened halftime (five minutes), EKU moved ahead 28-10 with 10:12 remaining in the third stanza on a one-yard one run by the QB, Matt Morrisey.

Schwartz connected on a 34-yard field goal, his second true boot of the game, at the 1:18 mark of the third quarter to make it 28-13. The Colonels tacked on points 34 and 35 with 11:23 left on a seven-yard score, and scored their final TD with 4:13 left.

Running back James Louis had a solid showing, churning up a season-high 69 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Bryce Patterson came on in the second half and led the Eagles through the air with 106 yards on eight completions.

On defense, safety Matthew McClelland had his second straight double-digit tackle game with 11. Linebacker Dillon Schobourgh came up with nine stops.

The Eagles finished with 228 total yards and allowed 433.

MSU returns to Jayne Stadium on Saturday when it hosts Valparaiso in the Pioneer Football League opener at 1 p.m. ET.
