Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State ran into a Panther buzzsaw Thursday night as Eastern Illinois swept Morehead State (24-26, 18-25, 12-25) at Gardella Family Court in Charleston, Illinois.
Morehead State (19-7, 13-2 OVC) was led by
M.E. Hargan with 11 kills.
Hollan Everett added eight terminations.
Eastern Illinois (19-6, 13-2 OVC) ran its win streak to 11 straight matches and tied the Eagles at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Panthers' attack was led by Destiny Walker with 17 kills, hitting .438. Katie Kopshever added 14 terminations and hit .542.
The match was tight from the beginning, with 18 ties and twelve lead changes in the frame. Down 15-13 at the break, MSU used a 3-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. Late in the set, after multiple ties, MSU used a 3-0 run to set up set point at 24-23. EIU ran off four straight points to take the first set. The Panthers hit .316 in the opening frame, compared to .235 for MSU.
Morehead State ran off five straight to kick off the second set, led by two kills from Heath and a service ace by libero
Courtney Fitzgerald. EIU responded with a five-point run of their own to tie the score at 7-7. A 4-0 run put the Panthers ahead 12-9. Â A 5-0 run put the EIU up 16-10 and gave the hosts a strangle-hold on the set. EIU hit .382 in the frame, compared to a .242 attack efficiency for Morehead State.
Eastern Illinois jumped out on top 5-1 to begin the third set and a pair of three-point runs put the Panthers ahead 13-6. A 3-0 run put EIU ahead 17-8 as the Panthers cruised to the finish.
The Eagles and the Panthers will face off Friday in the Gardella Family Court in the series capper. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
