MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Men's Basketball saw Western Illinois use a 19-5 second-half run to hand the Eagles a 72-67defeat at Western Hall Saturday.
MSU led by 12 (54-42) with nine minutes left after the third straight three-pointer by
Kade Ruegsegger, but Western got a couple of three-pointers by Marko Maletic and eventually pulled ahead 61-59. MSU tied it at 62 but Ryan Myers' lay-up moments later gave his team a lead it never relinquished.
MSU fell to 14-13 overall and 9-7 in the OVC. It's the fifth straight setback for the Eagles, something that had not occurred since 2017-18. WIU moved to 10-17 and 4-12 in the conference.
The Eagles led the majority of the first half, taking an 18-17 lead with 7:42 left. They led 33-30 at the half.
A bright spot for the Eagles was Kenny White, Jr., who had 12 points. He needed just eight coming into the game to reach 1,000 points for his college career and now has 1,004.
Anouar Mellouk led MSU with 13 points, while
Khouri Carvey had 10 points.
Morehead State had a hefty rebound edge at 42-29. Mellouk had a team-high eight, while White and Carvey grabbed seven each. The Eagles shot 38 percent for the game.Â
The Eagles return home this week to host SIUE and Eastern Illinois. SIUE visits first on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
