Morehead, Ky. -- The Morehead State women's basketball team got off to a fast start, but turnovers doomed the Eagles as they fell to Tennessee State 72-61 in the Gentry Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Morehead State (9-20/ 4-15 OVC) hit 10-20 from the floor and outscored Tennessee State 26-9 in the opening quarter. The Tigers managed just 3-18 (17%) from the floor, including missing all six of their three-point attempts.
Tennessee State (9-20/ 5-14 OVC) forced 24 MSU turnovers in the final three quarters leading to a 32-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Tigers also heated up from the floor, shooting 17-35 (49%) in the second half.
Morehead State managed only 3-13 shooting from the floor over the final quarter, getting out-scored 23-8.
MSU got balanced scoring, placing four players in double figures.
Michelle Ugwah and
Kate Novik led the Eagles with 13 points apiece. Novik pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Ugwah just missed her first double-double with nine boards.
Chrishawn Coleman finished with 12 points, and
Aileen Marquez added 10.
Maia Rosarion just missed her fourth career double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Tennessee State was led by Aaniya Webb with 26 points, a career-high. Somah Kamara finished with 14 for the Tigers.
Morehead State falls to ninth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, one place away from qualifying for the OVC Tournament next week. The Eagles travel to UT Martin Saturday to take on the Skyhawks, needing a win and a Tennessee State loss to advance.
