Softball Makes Positive Strides in Rematch with Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Six days ago, Morehead State fell to Austin Peay in South Carolina, 10-1 in five innings.

On Friday, the Eagles had improvements in virtually every category, before falling to the host of the Governors Classic.

MSU had more hits, fewer errors, surrendered fewer runs and gave away fewer free passes than it did last weekend. Those are all key positives for a team that is struggling to find success.

"What a huge step forward from a week ago, when this team run-ruled us in five innings. Sophie and Kendra have been hitting the ball well, and we even had a no-hitter through two and two-thirds innings. For the most part, our defense was also pretty solid today," MSU coach Megan Griffith said. "We have to find small things to focus on to help build our confidence. With the exception of base running, really every phase of this game was better than when we played them last weekend."

Freshman Rylie Burney (0-7) got the ball to start for Morehead State (1-15) and took the loss. She went the distance allowing seven hits, seven runs and just one walk.

At the plate, the Eagles were led by freshman Nyla Doiron, who went 2-for-2 on the day. Freshman Sophie Collins continues to generate offense and put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles were unable to hold the lead, as Austin Peay scored seven times over the remaining four innings to grab the 7-1 win.
