Eagles Bats Silenced by Dominating SIUE Pitching Saturday

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State's bats were tamed by SIUE starter Spencer Stearns, and the Eagles fell 4-1 Saturday at Roy E. Lee Field in Edwardsville, Ill.

Stearns (2-3) threw eight innings, allowing just one run on one hit. He struck out 12 MSU batters while walking one. Senior Tyler Davis pitched a clean ninth inning for his second save of the season.

Morehead State (8-13, 0-2 OVC) got their lone hit of the afternoon when third baseman Griffin Olson led off the third inning with a shot over the right field fence for his third home run of the season.

The Eagles got a good outing from their starting pitcher Grant Herron, making his second rehab start of the season. Herron pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit. He walked three Cougar batters and struck out three.

SIUE (9-12/ 2-0) got a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game on a foul sacrifice fly to right off MSU reliever Kamden Hawks (0-3), The Cougars went ahead in the fifth on a two-out solo home run by SIUE shortstop Chase Bloomer, his sixth of the season.

SIUE scratched two more runs in the seventh off Hawks, who threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out six Cougar batters and walked four.

Junior Hunter Porter pitched a perfect eighth for MSU.

The series finale will be tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.

  • Morehead State only managed three base runners against SIUE; Olson homered in the third and walked in the fifth. AJ Hacker was hit by a pitch in the third.
