In the world of athletics, dedication, and persistence are the two pillars of success. It is these very principles that have defined the journey of Morehead State track and field athlete
Weston Blair.
For Blair, the road to Division I athletics was never one paved with gold. It was one filled with countless hours of unseen effort, sweat, and sacrifice.
"You have to work incredibly hard all the time," Blair emphasized. "The most important work is always done in the dark. People might not see it, and you might not get the recognition for it right away, but all the hard work will pay off in the end."
Blair's journey is a testament to the fact that success is not handed out; it's earned through sheer determination and an unwavering commitment to one's goals.
"You have to want it more than anybody else to get it and not care what anybody says," Blair continued. "It's that killer's mentality that sets you apart."
Every athlete has a role model, someone whose journey inspires and motivates them. For Blair, that person is David Goggins, a former Navy SEAL and ultra-endurance athlete known for his mental toughness and ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.
"His mentality and ability to overcome the odds is inspiring and something that I strive to be more like," Blair shared.
But inspiration doesn't just come from distant figures; it often comes from the people closest to us. Blair credits his parents for playing a crucial role in shaping him into the athlete and person he is today.
"My mom and dad have always helped me, from the little things like driving me to practice to instilling in me the values that define who I am," Blair said. "My dad, in particular, pushed me to be as good as I possibly could be."
In addition to his family, Blair acknowledges the influence of his friend and former teammate, Landen Eyre.
"He was always someone who pushed me at practice, and that made me better," Blair said.
While track and field is Blair's chosen sport, it wasn't the only one he excelled in during his high school days. As a decorated high school basketball player, Blair had the opportunity to pursue a career in basketball. However, he made the decision to focus on his running career, a choice he doesn't regret.
"I'd say one or two decisions and I would be playing college basketball right now," Blair shared. "But I decided to really focus on my running career, which I'm glad I did. Basketball still holds a big place in my heart, though. If Coach Mattox here at Morehead State ever needed someone, I'd be there."
Blair's journey from high school basketball courts to Division I track and field embodies the essence of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of one's dreams. His story serves as a reminder that success is not solely about talent but more about the grit and determination to push through adversity.
As Blair continues his collegiate track and field career, he carries with him the lessons learned from his role models, the support of his family and friends, and the unyielding passion that drives him to be the best he can be.
