Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State got a big effort on the mound, but a ninth-inning Little Rock offensive onslaught was too much, and the Eagles fell 11-5 Friday night at Allen Field at Prefontaine Park.
Trailing 4-3 into the top of the ninth inning, Little Rock plated eight runs to put the game away.
Morehead State (10-21/ 1-9 OVC) got an outstanding effort by freshman
Kamden Hawks (0-4) out of the bullpen. He entered the game with two Trojan runners on and two outs in the bottom of the fourth and got a strikeout to kill the rally.
Hawks got through the eighth inning allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out 11 Little Rock batters in 4.1 innings of work. His final line was 4.1 innings pitched, three hits, four runs (three earned), he walked three and struck out 11, throwing a career-high 92 pitches.
Little Rock (13-19/ 3-6 OVC) got a nice outing by reliever Blake Van Cleve (1-2) out of the bullpen. He threw five innings, scattering six hits and gave up two earned runs for the win. He walked one batter and struck out six.
Morehead State had their chances. A big moment came in the fifth inning, when, with the score tied 2-2, the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs but were only able to plate one run to lead 3-2, leaving two on base.
MSU added another run in the seventh on a
Caden Sheridan double and was driven home by
Hunter Thomas.
The two teams will meet for game two of the series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ESPN+.

- Morehead State left nine runners on base; Little Rock left 12 stranded.
- Morehead State's pitching recorded 15 strikeouts; Little Rock pitching punched out 12.
- Kamden Hawks' 11 strikeouts were the most for an MSU pitcher since John Bakke struck out 12 against Murray State on May 27, 2021.
- The 15 punchouts by Eagle pitching was the most since 15 against Austin Peay on May 18, 2002. The last time that mark was surpassed was on March 27, 2022 against Murray State.Â
- Catcher Caden Sheridan led the MSU attack, going 3-3 at the plate with two doubles and a run batted in. He ran his hit streak out to eight games and has hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games.
- JJ Dutton slugged two doubles to extend his hit streak to 10 games. He's hit safely in 16 of the last 17.
- Hunter Thomas went 2-4 at the plate and drove in his OVC-leading 36th RBI of the season.
