Morehead State rallies from late tie for 6-5 win over Western Illinois in 7

MOREHEAD, Ky. --The Morehead State Eagles broke through after a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning to beat the Western Illinois Leathernecks 6-5 Sunday.

Rylie Burney (5-19) got the win for Morehead State (8-37, 6-16). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.

At the plate, the Eagles were led by Kendra Lewis, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and two RBI. Darlene Montoya put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Sela Pickford also contributed for Morehead State, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board.

The Leathernecks expanded their lead to 4-1 before the Eagles offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the third. Morehead State picked up a run on Lewis' leadoff home run off of Clark, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Leathernecks.

Morehead State kept the Leathernecks off the scoreboard before rallying to grab a 5-4 lead in the fourth. The Eagles added three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run triple from Montoya.

The Leathernecks then evened up the ballgame at five before Morehead State fought back to retake their advantage in the sixth inning. Lewis crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Eagles, bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of Morehead State. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as the Eagles held on for the win.
