Eagle Rally Comes up Just Short-MSU Falls 3-2

Morehead, Ky. -- For the second straight day, Morehead State out-hit Western Illinois but came up short, falling 3-2 to the Leathernecks at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb, Ill.

Morehead State (12-37/ 2-21 OVC) pounded out 10 hits but left 10 runners stranded, compared to six hits and eight left on base for Western Illinois.

Trailing 3-0, the Eagles rallied in the sixth inning. Alex Kean started the rally with a two-out single to right. Griffin Olson drove a triple down the right field line to score Kean and then scored on Eli

Kirkendoll's double to left trim the WIU lead to 3-2.

MSU also threatened two-out rallies in both the eighth and ninth innings but came up short. Kean doubled down the right field line in the eighth and Hunter Thomas doubled to right center in the ninth.

Western Illinois (17-28/ 9-14 OVC) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Right fielder Matt Olive led off with a walk, stole second with one out, and scored on a two-out single by shortstop Kenneth Perez.

The Leathernecks put up two more runs in third inning on a leadoff walk and two singles to go ahead 3-0.

Western Illinois starter Frederick Romano (4-3) got the win, throwing 5.2 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out five Eagle batters.

Jorge Romero (4) got the two-inning save, allowing two hits and recording one strikeout.

Eagle starter Grant Herron (0-4) took the loss for MSU. He pitched five innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits. He walked two and recorded six strikeouts.

Morehead State and Western Illinois will conclude their series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.

NOTABLE
  • JJ Dutton extended his reached-base streak to 28 games with his single in the first inning. His triple in the seventh inning was his fourth this season, which is tied for second-most in the OVC. He also notched his 16th multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Hunter Thomas rapped out three hits in five at bats, giving him his team-leading 19th multiple-hit game of the season and fourth with three hits.
  • Alex Kean extended his hit streak to 11 games with his single in the sixth inning. He also recorded his 17th multiple-hit game this season.
  • Reliever Will Grimmett kept the Eagles within striking distance. He threw three shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk. He struck out three Western Illinois batters.
  • Designated hitter Eli Kirkendoll went 2-4 at the plate with a run batted in.
