MOREHEAD, Ky. – Visiting Lindenwood scored in the 16th, 36th and 60th minutes to claim a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Morehead State on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field in Morehead.
Outside of goals, the game was statistically even. Both teams took 13 shots. Lindenwood (5-3-3/2-1-0) had four corner kicks to one for the Blue and Gold. LU committed one more foul (7-6). Neither team had a card, and the possession total was 50-50.
In addition to the scoring, there were a few differences. The Lions had nine shots on goal, while Morehead State (3-9-0/1-2-0) had two. Conversely, MSU had six saves to two for the visitors. The Eagles also drew both offside flags.
After stealing the ball deep in the Eagle zone, Mackenzie Compton began with the ball on the right side of the penalty box. After making a move to attempt to fake out her opponent, she passed the ball into the right corner to Lily Sutter, who immediately crossed it into the box, where she found Anna Johnson running onto it and then redirecting it just yards off the line to the right of MSU goalkeeper
Claire Cress for the game's first goal at the 15:50 mark.
Allison Schrumpf pushed the visitors ahead 2-0 after unleashing a shot from the right side just outside of the penalty box off a Rachel Jackson corner kick pass that was chest high and went to the right of a diving Cress at 35:59.
The Lions iced the win when Compton scored unassisted at 59:04. She tracked down a loose ball just outside the penalty area, played forward by Johnson, faked out an Eagle defender and from the left corner of the goal box kicked it just inside the upper right-hand corner of the goal.
LU had a pair of additional chances to get on the board but were snuffed out by Cress.
Lindenwood bounced back from a Thursday home loss to improve to 3-1-1 on the road this season. The Lions closed out September with a 2-2-1 mark. It was LU's first win in Morehead. The series is now knotted at 2-2-1.
MSU fell to 3-4 at home this fall and 2-5 this month. It was the team's second straight defeat, the sixth time this year it did not register a goal and the fourth time it surrendered three or more.
There were three hydration breaks in the game, one slightly after the midpoint of the first half, and then two in the second half, one with 30 minutes to play and another with 15 minutes remaining.
Freshman forward
Jade Walton tied a team season high in shots with six and recorded the only two on goal. Johnson, Compton and Ava Blum each had three shots to lead the visitors.
Cress recorded six saves but fell to 3-9 on the season. Caroline Ritter collected two saves and improved to 5-3-3 in the net.
Morehead State had the ball in the Lion defensive zone for 49 percent of its possession time, while Lindenwood achieved the same on 53 percent of its time with the ball.
The Eagles will take a week off to regroup. Their next game will take place at Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. ET. Morehead State will be back at home to entertain Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
