Strong Non-Conference Campaign Continues for Eagle Soccer

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State women's soccer team will look to build off Thursday's win over Miami-Ohio as the team heads to Radford, Va., to face Radford in a rematch of a game that ended 1-1 in Morehead last year.

The two teams will square off at 1 p.m. at Tom Lillard Field at Cupp Stadium.

"Radford are a quality team with quality up front," MSU coach Paul Cox said. "They will pose a different test to Miami but we are looking to build on Thursday's result."

Morehead State (2-4-0) is coming off a 1-0 home win over Miami-Ohio on Thursday in which it was outshot 16-1. Senior midfielder Kennedy Baquero scored the game's lone goal.

The victory snapped a three-game skid, marked the team's first mid-week win of the season, increased its all-time record versus Miami-Ohio to 8-2-0 and raised its goal total to three.

The Eagles post team averages of 0.5 goals per game, 7.7 shots per game, 3.5 shots on goal per game, 3.17 corner kicks per game, 9.67 fouls per game, 0.5 offside calls per game, 5.5 saves per game and 0.83 cards per game. Its opponents are averaging 2.5 gpg, 17 shots per game, 7.67 shots on goal per game, 5.5 ckpg, 9.33 fpg, 1.67 offside calls per game, 3.00 saves per game and 1.0 cards per game.

Individually, Baquero now leads the team with one goal, one assist and three points. She also has taken three shots. Graduate student midfielder Karissa Velz adds one goal, two points and five shots. Freshman defender Faith Peper has one goal, two points and three shots. Junior defender/midfielder Hannah Burke has contributed two assists. Freshman forward Jade Walton and freshman midfielder Charlotte Lee each have a team-best six shots.

In the net, sophomore Claire Cress has played all but 45 minutes and has a 2-4 record, 2.36 goals against average, 30 saves, a .698 save percentage and two shutouts. She now has 4.5 career saves, which ranks eighth on the MSU all-time list.

Radford (2-2-1) is MSU's sixth opponent this season which enters the game with at least at .500 record. The Highlanders have a two-game unbeaten streak, having defeated Division II Shepherd 4-1 at home last Sunday, Aug. 31 and then tied Richmond 1-1 on the road on Thursday, Aug. 28. Radford is 2-1 at home this season, having also defeated Emory & Henry 2-0 on August 21 and falling to Campbell 3-1 on August 24.

As a team, RU is averaging 1.8 gpg, 14.6 shots per game, 8.4 shots on goal per game, 5.2 ckpg, 8.6 fpg, 3.0 offside flags per game, 3.8 saves per game and 0.8 cpg. Its opponents average 1.4 gpg, 9.8 shots per game, 5.0 shots on goal per game, 5.0 ckpg, 8.0 fpg, 0.8 offside flags per game, 6.6 saves per game and 0.4 cpg.

Junior forward Jashyra Johnson has seven points on two goals and three assists. She also has taken eight shots. Senior forward/midfielder Lilly Short and senior forward Paige Olson both have scored twice and assisted once for five points. Short has taken a team-high 14 shots. Olson has 12 to her credit. Junior forward/midfielder Ava Kertgate has 10 shots. Three other Highlanders have scored. Sophomore defender Mallory Harmison has two assists. Ten players have started every game.

Junior goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi has a 2-2-1 record, with a 1.40 gaa, 19 saves, a .731 save percentage and one shutout.

Coach Ben Sohrabi is in his 30th season at Radford and is 307-200-47.

The two teams have met three times, twice in Morehead and once in Virginia. Last year, the teams tied 1-1 at MSU. In 2001, the Highlanders won at home 5-1. In 2002, RU won 6-1 in Morehead.

Baquero scored the lone goal in the 62nd minute in the 2024 meeting. She finished with a career-best six shots. Eileen Albers got the equalizer off an Olson pass in the 82nd minute. MSU goalkeeper Lilly Bailey made six saves.

Both teams took 12 shots, with seven on goal, had four corner kicks and committed four fouls. Both teams also made six saves. MSU was flagged for being offside three times, with Radford docked twice.

Jordan Phillips and Radvanyi shared time in RU's net. Phillips started and was credited with two saves. Radvanyi began the second half, surrendered the goal, but made four saves.

The Highlanders held control of the ball for 60 percent of the game, but more than half of it came on their side of the field. MSU had possession on offense and defense equally in the game.
