MSU Women to Square Off with Lindenwood Saturday

Morehead, Ky.-- The Morehead State women's basketball team wraps up their four-game homestand Saturday when they host Lindenwood in Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM) with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. It can also be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin describing the action.
 
Morehead State is coming off a 64-60 win over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday night in Johnson Arena. Kate Dike posted her seventh double-double of the season with 26 points and 12 rebounds. She hit nine of her 16 shots from the floor and two of her three three-pointers. She also went six of eight from the free throw line.

Morehead State used a 23-5 second half run to grab their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles forced 22 SIUE turnovers, 12 in the second half resulting in 16 points off turnovers in the final 20 minutes. Landon Forbes iced the game with two free throws with three seconds left, giving her 12 points on the game. Marie Sepp added 11 for MSU.

Lindenwood outlasted Southern Indiana 69-67 Thursday night in Evansville. Ellie Brueggemann led the Lions with 26 points, hitting eight of her 14 shots from the floor, including six of her 10 three pointers. Brooke Coffey finished with 16 points and Aleshia Jones added 15. Lindenwood was outrebounded 31-23, but a 10-7 edge in offensive rebounds led to a 13-6 advantage in second chance points. The Lions committed just 10 turnovers and had an 18-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Morehead State outlasted Lindenwood 51-50 to get their first Ohio Valley Conference win on New Year's Day in St. Charles. The Eagles scored the game's first seven points on the way to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter and led 26-21 at the half. In the final quarter, the Eagles grew their lead to 13 with 4:55 to go. Lindenwood mounted a furious rally, tying the game at 50-50 with three seconds to go. Sepp was fouled with under a second to play and hit one of two free throws for the win. Laura Toffali led MSU with 17 points and Sepp added 12.

  • Morehead State averages 60.6 points per game in conference play, ranking seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles average allowing 59.8 in OVC games, ranking third in the league.

  • Dike has averaged 19.8 points per game during the last four games. She started the streak with 24 points at Tennessee Tech and had 26 Thursday night against SIUE. Sepp is next for MSU at 12.8 points per game in the streak. Toffali has scored at a 10.8 points per game clip.
  • Laura Toffali went for 22 points against Eastern Illinois last Saturday. The only game in the streak MSU failed to have a 20-point scorer was against Western Illinois last Thursday, when the Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by Violet McNece who posted a new career-high with 18.
  • Dike leads Morehead State averaging 15.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game ranking sixth in both categories in the OVC. In conference play, she ranks fourth in the league with 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
  • Dike ranks fifth in the OVC hitting 49.8% from the floor. She leads MSU hitting 37.9% (22-58) from three-point range. She ranks 13th in the OVC hitting 70.7% from the free throw line. She ranks 15th in the league with 14 blocked shots.
  • Toffali is averaging 12.2 points per game this season (18th in the OVC). She has scored 20+ points five times this season, setting her career-high of 24 against Eastern Kentucky November 26. Last Saturday against Eastern Illinois, she posted 22 points and a new career-high with 10 free throws.
  • Toffali leads the OVC with 61 steals. That ranks T-20 in the nation. Her 2.77 steals per game rate also tops the OVC and ranks 33rd nationally.
  • Toffali's 67.4% free throw percentage ranks 15th in the OVC. She has hit 75% (48-64) from the line in conference games.
  • Sepp leads the OVC with 104 assists on the season. Her 4.73 assists per game average also tops the OVC.
  • Sepp ranks t-15 in conference games averaging 6.0 rebounds per game.
  • Morehead State is 6-1 in conference games when Sepp finished in double figures scoring. In games where she did not, the Eagles are 2-2.
  • McNece ranks 10th in the OVC with 33 three-pointers made this season. She has also recorded 14 blocked shots this season (t-11 in the OVC).
  • Forbes posted 12 points in MSU's win over SIUE Thursday night, her sixth double-figure outing of the season.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
 
Lindenwood is coached by Amy Egan, in her third season in St. Charles. She has a record of 46-38 at Lindenwood and is 2-2 against Morehead State.
 
The Lions roll into Morehead on a three-game winning streak and winners of seven of their last eight. They are averaging 73.3 points per game in conference games, which leads the Ohio Valley Conference. They are allowing an average of 61.1 points per game, which is tied with Western Illinois for fourth in the conference.
 
Lindenwood leads the OVC, hitting 40.4% from three-point range in conference play. They are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game, which also tops the OVC.  The Lions also top the OVC hitting a 46.4% field goal percentage. The Lions average 14 turnovers per game and are second in the conference with a +2.64 turnover margin.
 
  • Aleshia Jones leads the Lions averaging 15.2 points per game (ranking 5th in the OVC). She has hit 50.2% of her field goal attempts this season (ranking 4th in the OVC) and is shooting 34% from three-point range. In conference play, she is averaging 16.3 points per game (ranking   in the OVC).
