Women's Hoops Looks to Extend Win Streak Against SEMO

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State wraps up its brief two-game homestand Saturday when they host Southeast Missouri in Ellis T. Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM) with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. The game can be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin describing the action.
 
Morehead State comes into the game riding a four-game winning streak after their 67-49 win over UT Martin Thursday night in Johnson Arena. The Eagles placed four players in double figures for the second time this season. MSU was led by Landon Forbes, who posted her first double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Kate Dike posted her second double-double in a row the fifth of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. Josephine Enander finished with 14 points and Marie Sepp chipped in 12.
 
Southeast Missouri is coming off a 77-46 loss at Southern Indiana Thursday night. SEMO was out-rebounded in the game 45-26 and committed 30 turnovers leading to a 39-12 USI advantage in points off turnovers. Carmen Taylor led the Redhawks with 14 points. Southern Indiana was 28-35 from the free throw line, while SEMO went seven of 11 from the charity stripe.

NOTABLE
  • Morehead State's four-game winning streak is their first since January 6-18, 2024. The Eagles tallied wins over Tennessee State, Eastern Illinois, SIUE and UT Martin in that stretch. The last time MSU reeled off five straight was from January 12 to February 7, 2019, when the Eagles ran off eight straight wins.
  • After two games where the Eagles shot 23 three-pointers total, MSU let the three-ball fly Thursday against UT Martin. Morehead State shot 12-33 (36%) from beyond the arc. Landon Forbes was 4-8 and Josephine Enander went 4-10 from distance to pace the Eagle barrage.
  • MSU has put up 429 treys this season, averaging 26.8 attempts per game which ranks 23rd nationally in Division I.
  • Morehead State shot 36% from the floor Thursday night against UT Martin, breaking a three-game streak of shooting over 50%. The Eagles are hitting 41.7% from the floor, ranking third in the OVC. In the Eagles' five conference games, they hit 44.7%, which ranks second in the league.
  • Morehead State held UT Martin to 49 points Thursday night, the fourth game in a row MSU's opponents have scored 50 points or less. MSU ranks third in the OVC allowing just 60.4 points per game in OVC conference games.
  • The Eagles out-rebounded UT Martin 37-30 Thursday night, their fourth straight game winning the battle on the glass. Morehead State is 6-0 this season when out-rebounding their opponents.
  • Morehead State has been hot and cold this season at the free throw line. Thursday night, MSU hit 13 of their 14 charity tosses. On the season, the Eagles are shooting at 67.9% (188-277) ranking ninth in the OVC. In conference play, MSU has shot 59-82 (72.0%) ranking eighth in the OVC.
  • Kate Dike posted her second straight double-double Thursday with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She leads MSU averaging 14.3 points per game (6th in the OVC) and 7.1 rebounds per game (7th in the OVC).
  • Dike is hitting 55.6% (30-54) from the floor through the Eagles' first five OVC conference games. That ranks third in the OVC.
  • Laura Toffali ranks second on the club averaging 12.5 points per game (T-13 in the OVC) and 4.8 rebounds per game.
  • Last season at Missouri Western, Toffali hit 78% from the free throw line. This season, she started slowly from the line hitting just 64.8% on the season. In the Eagles' five conference games, she's shooting 76.9% (20-26). She hit all four of her attempts Thursday against UT Martin.
  • Toffali has 43 steals on the season, the most in the OVC. Her 2.7 steals per game ranks second in the OVC behind Southern Indiana's Shannon Blacher. She had nine steals against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 28, believed to be the program record.
  • Marie Sepp leads the OVC averaging 4.9 assists per game. The Eagles ranks second in the OVC averaging 14.6 helpers per game.
  • Sepp has scored in double figures in the last four straight games and five of the last six. She is third on the club averaging 10.9 points per game.
  • Forbes leads Morehead State (and ranks T-3 in the OVC) averaging 3.4 assists per game. While she gives, she can also take away: her 8 steals in league play leads MSU and ranks T-13 in the conference.
  • In conference play, Enander leads MSU in three-point accuracy, hitting 9-25 (36.0%). Lindenwood's Ellie Brueggemann leads the conference hitting 14-22 (34%) in league play.
  • Violet McNece leads Morehead State with 11 blocked shots (T-10th in the OVC).
 
 
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
 
Southeast Missouri is led by head coach Briley Palmer, who is her second season in Cape Girardeau. The Redhawks rank fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 68.4 points per game. They rank ninth in the conference allowing 69 points per game. SEMO is second in the conference with 54 blocked shots.
 
  • Carmen Taylor paces SEMO averaging 12.6 points per game (12th in the OVC). She has scored in double figures in four of SEMO's five conference games. She posted 18 points against Eastern Illinois on New Year's Day.
  • Sophomore center Ainaya Williams comes into Johnson Arena averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She ranks second in the OVC with 24 blocked shots. She scored a career-high 24 points in the Redhawks' conference opener at Tennessee State on December 18.
  • Lexi McCully averages 12.5 points per game. She scored a season-high 18 points at Wichita State on November 18.
