MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Soccer was defeated by Southeast Missouri State, 2-1, on Sunday at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Once again,
Ashton Lynam was the Eagles' goal scorer. She's now scored the last three goals for the Eagles, being the first to do so since Hedda Ornberg did it in four consecutive games in October of 2024.Â
The Eagles and Redhawks kicked off at 2:00 p.m. ET, in the midst of a low 80 degrees, sunny day.
In the sixth minute, SEMO converted a corner kick, as Taylor Cassidy delivered a perfect ball that found Olivia Klinkhardt, who headed it into the top of the net, putting the Redhawks up early, 1-0.
MSU appeared to get the equalizer at the 15-minute mark when
Olivia Lowe headed the ball in off a corner kick, but the play was waved off due to an offside call.
In the 24th minute,
Gaia Fubelli found the ball in stride, made a defender miss, and delivered a shot on goal that was saved by the Redhawks' keeper, Natalie Allison.Â
The remainder of the first half saw SEMO control the offensive attack, but none of the Redhawks' chances found the net, as
Allie Lammers recorded three more saves before halftime.
Four minutes and 45 seconds into the second half, SEMOÂ completed three straight passes down into the box for Hayley Hogenmiller to head it past Lammers to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead. Riley Henderson and Maya Domian were credited with an assist on the nifty play.Â
Hogenmiller and Lammers appeared to collide in the goal, resulting in Lammers being removed from the game due to a head injury.
Amira Hendrick replaced her in goal.
Less than two minutes later, Fubelli had another chance to score, but played it too high and it hit off the crossbar.Â
In the 56th minute, sophomore
Faith Peper carried the ball 50 yards down the field while battling a Redhawks defender the entire way before crossing it over to Lynam. Lynam dribbled to the five-yard line (of the football field) and fired a high shot to the upper left corner past Allison to get the Eagles on the board for the first time in conference play this season.
Lynam's goal ended a team scoreless streak of 280 minutes and 41 seconds.
Jocelyn Alicea was close to adding another goal for the Redhawks in the 70th minute, but her header bounced in front of Hendrick who recorded the save.
The Eagles had one final opportunity to score between the 85th and 88th minute.Â
MSU had two corner kicks that led to a header over the top by Peper, and a 30+ yard shot by Hannah Carter that was saved by Allison.
SEMO recorded one final shot in the final minute, but it was saved by Hendrick, and the Redhawks claimed the match, 2-1.Â
The Redhawks improve to 3-6-4 (2-0-1), continuing a trio of unbeaten streaks: five at home, four overall and three in the Ohio Valley Conference; while notching their highest goal total this season.
