EIU Scores Crushing Goal In Final Minute, MSU Falls 1-0 On Senior Day

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Eastern Illinois scored the game-winning goal with 37 seconds remaining, deflating Morehead State 1-0 at MSU Soccer Field, Sunday, in Morehead, Ky.

Today's match was Senior Day, honoring Molly Tapak, Hannah Burke, and Hannah Carter for their contributions to the MSU Soccer program.

"To lose a game in 30 seconds, in a game you should've won, is a difficult one to take," said Head Coach Paul Cox. "Looking at the positives, the team worked, really, really, really hard. Back to two weeks ago when we were here against SIUE, we've done a complete 180, so I'm taking that as a positive. The team is coming back to what we saw in non-conference, but that's a gut punch for sure."

He later continued talking about the offensive changes he witnessed.

"We need to get more shots on goal and be more aggressive, and Brett (Ekperuoh) said it, we need to be more 'relentless'. That was kind of our word that we wanted to be, and we showed it today, just missing the goal."

Morehead State and Eastern Illinois kicked off at 1:00 p.m. on a breezy, but sunny afternoon.

The first half featured an Eagles offense that controlled the tempo for the vast majority of the 45 minutes.

Jade Walton put the first shot on goal for MSU in the 10th minute, but it was saved by Ella Kratochvil.

Amara Leppla fired a shot from a couple yards outside of the box in the 12th minute, but Amira Hendrick halted it.

In the 16th minute, Abby Reinl dibbled the ball up 2/3 of the field, cut through the MSU defense, and fired a shot just inside the box, but Hendrick recorded another save.

Following that shot, it was all Morehead State the rest of the half, out-shooting the Panthers 6-0 the rest of the half.

Walton and Ava Peck each had chances to score, but Kratochvil saved each of their shots on goal.

In total, the Eagles outshot EIU 8-3 in the first half.

In the second half, the game was flipped on its axil, and Eastern Illinois pushed the tempo most of the second half.

Eastern Illinois attempted five shots in the first nine minutes, none of which were on target.

Walton had two more chances, once in the 46th minute and one in the 50th minute, both of which were saved by Kratochvil.

EIU and MSU traded shots throughout the remainder of the game, with the final two Morehead State shots coming from Walton, and Faith Peper, both of which were saved by Kratochvil.

The Panthers attempted four shots in the final eight minutes.

Alex Tetteh broke free in the 86th minute, challenging Hendrick into a one-on-one situation. Tetteh's shot went left and the game stayed knotted up at zero.

With 37 seconds remaining in the contest, Tetteh sent a cross through the box toward the right side of the field, where Cora Erickson capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a late goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Eastern Illinois.

Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half, the Panthers outshot the Eagles in the contest, 17-13. The Panthers also led in saves 7-4, with Kratochvil recording seven and Hendrick recording four. There were only three corner kicks in the contest, all of which were taken by Eastern Illinois. MSU led in fouls, 9-6, and was also given the lone yellow card.

Jade Walton recorded five shots on goal, marking the first time a Morehead State Eagle has reached that mark since Dani Wilson did so against SIUE on Oct. 26, 2018.

Eastern Illinois improved to 5-6-3 (3-2), while Morehead State fell to 5-10-1 (0-4-1), still in search of its first conference victory.

"With Tech (Tennessee) and Little Rock leaving this conference, the conference is wide open," Cox said. "I think our first three games, we weren't at the races, but we've showed up in the last three games and I don't fear anyone moving into the tournament. Unfortunately our seed is probably going to be lower than we want it to be, but if we can beat Western (Illinois) next week, we'll leapfrog them and just take it one step at a time."

MSU will be back in action next Sunday, Oct. 25, when the Eagles tangle with Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill., at 2:00 p.m. ET.
