MOREHEAD, Ky. -- It was fitting that Saturday is Halloween because the Morehead State and Jacksonville State Rifle teams matched up in a thriller at Button Range as the Eagles came out on top of a close battle, 4,690-4,687.
The home team squeaked past the Gamecocks by one point in Air Rifle, 2,369-2,368 and edged the visitors by two in Smallbore, 2,321-2,319. Morehead State swept the season shoulder-to-shoulder matches with JSU as well. MSU's two highest scores of the season in aggregate both came against JSU (4,695 and 4,690). Saturday's 4,690 is the fourth highest total in program history.
Morehead State was led by freshman
Karis Junker, who set career bests in Air Rifle (597) and Smallbore (582) to lead all shooters in combined score at 1179, with 77 total centers, which is also a career-best aggregate for her.
In Air Rifle, Junker led the charge followed by fellow freshman
Lucy Evans with a 594. Junior
Chloe Shannon helped the victory with a 593, while freshman
Ysabelle Martinez turned in a 585. Junior
Trey Myers rounded out the counters at 580. Smallbore saw Martinez take the team honors with a 587. Myers hit the 580 mark, while junior
George Kuhne was close behind at 579. Evans (575) and Shannon (574) finished the Eagles' scoring targets.
Other notables in Air included senior
Cooper Gray's career-best 589. Kuhne and freshman
James Wright fashioned 585 each. Senior
Corbin Jockers (584) and sophomore
Hannah Goin (583) shot well as well.
MSU travels to Memphis next Saturday and then faces UT Martin for a third time this year on Sunday, this time at Murray State's range.
