Eagle Soccer Overcome By SIUE's Offensive Success

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State Soccer was overcome by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's offensive success, falling to the Cougars 4-0 in Morehead, Ky., at MSU Soccer Field.

SIUE has now put up back to back games with four goals, outscoring its opponents 8-1 in the first two games of conference play.

MSU and SIUE kicked off today at 1:00 p.m. ET., with good weather, featuring a warm overcast atmosphere.

The Cougars pushed the offensive tempo immediately, firing six shots within the first 15 minutes and nine seconds.

In the 13th minute, SIUE's goalkeeper Baylor Lynch sent the ball deep into Morehead State territory, where it found Claire Nieroda. Nieroda played the ball to Tori Backstadter who took a few touches before launching a shot from two yards above the penalty arc, finding the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Just one minute and 15 seconds later, the opposite happened. This time, Backstadter dribbled up the field and delivered a through ball to Nieroda, who capitalized by scoring her seventh goal of the season to give SIUE a 2-0 lead.

Morehead State's only shot of the first half was in the final seconds, effectively being outshot 10-1 in the first half. SIUE delivered five shots on goal, three of which were saved by Eagles' keeper Allie Lammers.

Coming out of halftime, SIUE continued the tempo, coming close to scoring twice, but failed after a team save by Hannah Burke and a blocked shot off the ricochet.

In the 60th minute, Bockstadter dribbled up the field before slipping the ball to Nieroda, who delivered a perfect pass in stride to MaryClaire Imig who snuck it past new MSU keeper Amira Hendrick, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Bockstadter and Nieroda each recorded their second assist on the contest, combining for eight total points between the two.

In the 61st minute, MSU had its first big scoring opportunity of the match. Gaia Fubelli played the ball in the box to Molly Tapak, who attempted a header that sailed just over the goal.

In the 64th minute, Keara Chaffee received a throw-in and, after a couple of touches, spun and fired a right-footed shot that was saved by Lynch.

The Eagles' final big scoring opportunity came in the 78th minute. Senior Hannah Carter delivered the ball into the box in transition, giving Ashton Lynam an opportunity to capitalize, but her shot was saved by Lynch.

Finally, in the 81st minute, SIUE's Zeniyah Russell sent the ball towards MSU's goal, where it was headed away by Carter. The clearance fell right to Marin Vines, who sunk the fourth goal for the Cougars, effectively capping off the scoring for the afternoon.

Morehead State falls to 5-8 (0-2), while SIUE improves to 4-3-3 (2-0).

The Cougars led in shots, 18-6, and shots on goal, 8-2. Morehead State finished with four saves (three for Lammers, one for Hendrick), while Lynch for SIUE finished with two. SIUE led in corners 5-2, and was flagged for three offsides, compared to the Eagles' two.

Morehead State will take to the road against Southeast Missouri, kicking off on Oct. 11, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
