Second-Half Louisville Scoring Flurry Too Much for Men's Hoops

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A close game early eventually evaporated for the Morehead State men's basketball team at No. 11 Louisville in the KFC Yum! Center Saturday. Louisville used a 33-0 second-half flurry to distance itself for the 107-57 decision.

MSU fell to 1-2 on the young 2026-27 season, while the home team moved to 2-0.

MSU held early 14-9 and 18-17 leads but an 18-4 run pushed the 'Cards ahead for good, 35-22. MSU trailed 46-32 at the half.

"I honestly thought we played a good first half, but Louisville just really affected us around the rim and we couldn't score against those guys," said head coach Jonathan Mattox. "I thought Clayton Parker had another nice game. Clayton and Chase Dawson, our point guard, are our two best players. I thought Louisville did a great job on Chase. He can typically get in the paint, score and create for others, and he just couldn't today."

Dawson's bucket with 17:49 left in the game set the score at Louisville ahead 53-35, but that's the last field goal the Eagles managed until Parker finally hit a hook shot at 6:48. In between, Louisville outscored MSU 33-0 to lead 86-35.

The hosts ended up outscoring MSU 61-24 in the final 20 minutes and shot percent for the game. Louisville also nailed 13 of 38 three-pointers and out-boarded the Eagles 59-23.

Parker had his third straight double-figure scoring game with a team-high 19. Kyrell Shaw posted a career-high nine rebounds. The Eagles were held to 27 percent from the floor in the second half and 33 percent for the day.

"I told our team, Kyrell had nine rebounds but no one else had more than three. That's good and bad. Great for Kyrell but we needed to get more rebound production from others," said Mattox.

Louisville saw seven score 10+, led by Obinna Ekezie, Jr., with 20.

MSU has a week off until hosting IU Indy Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
